    She sang of a place so wondrous the minds 
Of people could not even begin to imagine itŠ. 
 
Cantaba de un lugar tan maravilloso que la mentes 
De las gentes ni si quiera podían empezar a imaginar. 
 
MANY GENERATIONS AFTER Old Woman freed herself  from her meat bag of skin, 
many years after the secrets began to be taught by and to the chosen women, 
the first period of testing occurred, a period Old Woman had known could 
occur. 
 
MUCHAS GENERACIONES DESPUÉS de que la Vieja Mujer se liberara de su carne 
con su saco de pellejos, muchos años después de que los secretos empezaran a 
serles enseñados a las mujeres escogidas por quienes también fueran 
escogidas, ocurrió el primer período de pruebas, un período que Vieja Mujer 
sabía habría de acontecer. 
 
   The women for centuries had not concerned themselves with politics or 
arguments.  They left these things to the men, to give them something to 
occupy themselves with during the long dark months  of winter.  The women 
concerned themselves with spiritual things and with studying the teachings 
of the society [women´s secret society that kept knowledge alive], and with 
children and keeping the society strong, and with making sure life was lived 
as it ought to be, fully, and with contentment. 
 
       Las mujeres durante siglos no se habían ocupado de la política ni de 
las discusiones.  Le habían dejado semejantes cosas a los hombres, para 
darles algo que hacer que los mantuviese ocupados durante los largos meses 
del invierno.  Las mujeres se ocupaban de las cosas espirituales y 
estudiaban las enseñanzas de la sociedad [la sociedad secreta de las mujeres 
que mantenía vivo el conocimiento], y de los niños, y de mantener fuerte a 
la sociedad, velando porque la vida  se viviera como se debe, plenamente y 
con contento. 
 
   The women became complacent.  They thought because things had Always been 
so, they would Always remain so.  And they did not notice that the men thad 
begun to dominate many areas of society.  Had become powerful. Had begun to 
believe their poser was the way things were supposed to be. 
 
Las mujeres fueron tomando la cosas como si todo ya estuviera dicho. 
Pensaron que porque las cosas Siempre habían sido así, que Siempre lo 
seguirían siendo.   Y ni se enteraron de que los hombres habían comenzado a 
dominar muchas área de la sociedad.  Se habían hecho poderosos.  Habían 
comenzado a creer que su poder era tal cual se suponía que fuera. 
 
   Some of the women even thought the men were right, and that their ideas 
were as things were supposed to be. And slowly, the men took control of all 
of life.  Until the women were left with freedom only within the Society of 
Women itself.     
 
 Algunas de la mujeres hasta pensaron que los hombres tenían la razón, y que 
sus ideas se ajustaban a las cosas tal cual se suponía que fueran.  Y poco a 
poco, los hombres llegaron a controlar toda la vida.  Hasta que a las 
mujeres ya no le quedó otra libertad que la que encontraban dentro de la 
Sociedad de Mujeres misma. 
 
  The men began to give orders to the women, and to say which man their 
daughters would marry.  The men began to insist that inheritance should not 
come through the women at all. 
 
Los hombres comenzaron a darles órdenes a las mujeres, y a decidir con cuál 
de los hombres habría de casarse la hija.   Los hombres comenzaron a 
insistir en que por ningún concepto la herencia debería ser heredada por 
medio de la mujer. 
    
   And then, when things were not at all as they ought to be, a thing 
happened that is still spoken of among the women of the society. 
 
Y entonces, cuando la cosa no eran para nada como deberían ser, algo sucedió 
de lo cual aún se platica dentro de la sociedad de mujeres. 
 
   Tem Eyos Ki went to the waiting house to pass her sacred time in  sacred 
place, sitting on moss and giving her inner blood to the Earth Mother.  Men 
were not allowed near the waiting house, it was too sacred form them to 
understand or approach.  And Tem Eyos Ki stayed in the waiting house with 
some of the other women whose time it was, and she was there for more than 
four days. 
 
Tem Eyos Ki fue a la casa de espera para pasar su tiempo sagrado en un lugar 
sagrado, sentada sobre el moho mientras le ofrecía su sangre interna a la 
Madre Tierra.  A los hombres no se les permitía acercarse a la casa de 
espera, era demasiado sagrada para sus facultades de entendimiento y para su 
modo de acercarse a las cosas.  Y Tem Eyos Ki permaneció en la casa de 
espera con otras mujeres cuyo tiempo también era llegado, y allí estuvo 
durante más de cuatro días. 
 
 When she came from the waiting house she was a woman hit by lightning, a 
woman struck by wonder, a woman shaken with power, a woman filled with love. 
She walked from the waiting house with a look on her face more potent than 
magic.  Seeds of life glittered n her hair. 
 
       Cuando regresó de la casa de espera era una mujer a la que le pegara 
un rayo, una mujer deslumbrada ante la maravilla, una mujer conmovida por el 
poder, una mujer colmada de amor.  Caminó desde la casa de espera con una 
mirada sobre el rostro más poderosa que la magia.  Las semillas de la vida 
brillaban en sus cabellos. 
 
   She smiled, and sang a song that told of love that knew no limits, o love 
that knew no bounds, of love that demanded nothing and expected nothing but 
fulfilled everything.  She sang of knowing and trusting, of sharing and 
giving.  She sang of a place so wondrous the minds of people could not even 
begin to imagine it.  A place without anger or fear, a place without 
loneliness or incompletion. 
 
Sonreía y cantaba una canción que contaba de un amor sin límites, de un amor 
que no conocía fronteras, de un amor que no pedía nada y no esperaba nada 
pero que todo lo llenaba.  Cantaba de saber y de confiar, de compartir y de 
dar.  Cantaba de una lugar tan asombroso que las mentes de las gentes ni si 
quiera lo podían imaginar.  Un lugar sin enojo ni miedo, un lugar sin 
soledad y sin carencias. 
 
   She walked through the village singing hers song, and the women followed 
her song, and the women followed her.  They collected their children, boys 
and girls alike, and followed Tem Eyos Ki, leaving behind the cooking pots 
and weaving looms, leaving behind the husbands and fathers. 
 
  Atravesó la aldea cantando sus canciones, y las mujeres fueron tras su 
canto, y las mujeres la siguieron. Recogieron a sus hijos, niños y niñas por 
igual, y siguieron a Tem Eyos Ki, dejando tras sí cazuelas y telares, 
dejando tras sí a esposos y padres. 
    
   Tem Eyos Ki walked past the village, along the beach toward the forest, 
singing her song of love and wonder.  And the women followed. 
 
Tem Eyos Ki atravesó la aldea, a lo largo de la playa hacia el bosque, 
cantando su canción de amor y de deslumbramiento.  Y las mujeres detrás 
fueron. 
 
   The men found the village empty, the meals uncooked, the work unfinished. 
They followed the women, angry and threatening.  They followed the women 
into the forest.  Followed the women who followed Tem Eyos Ki, who followed 
the song she learned in the waiting house when she found love. 
 
Los  hombres encontraron la aldea vacía, los alimentos sin cocinar, el 
trabajo por terminarse.  Se fueron tras las mujeres, enojados, apretados de 
puños.  Tras ellas en el bosque se metieron.  En pos de las mujeres que 
seguían a Tem Eyos Ki fueron, quien a su vez seguía la canción aprendida en 
la casa de espera, cuando encontró el amor. 
 
Storm wind tried to stop the men and gales and rain. The forest tried to 
stop them. Even the sky tried to stop them with thunder and lightning and 
the sea smashed herself against the rocks to warn the women. 
 
El viento de la tormenta trató de detener a los hombre con ráfagas y lluvia. 
El bosque trató de detenerles, .  Hasta el cielo trató de detenerles con el 
trueno y el relámpago y las aguas del mar se estrellaron contra las rocas 
para advertir a las mujeres del peligro. 
 
   The women wept and said they did not want to return home.  The men 
threatened to kill Tem Eyos Ki. To silence her song so that she would never 
again tempt their women from their hearth fires.  They went after Tem Eyos 
Ki to kill her. 
 
Las mujeres lloraban y decían que no querían regresar a casa.  Los hombres 
las amenazaron con matar a Tem Eyos Ki.  Silenciar su canción para que nunca 
más se sintieran tentadas sus mujeres a abandonar el hogar.  Se fueron tras 
Tem Eyos Ki para matarla. 
 
   But Qolus, who is a female figure and was father of the four sons who 
fathered all ordinary people, sent a magic dugout, and Tem Eyos Ki leaped 
into it, still singing her song. She flew above the heads of the shouting 
men and the weeping women and sang of things people had forgotten  The storm 
stopped, the wind calmed, the rain stopped falling and the sea became still. 
All creation listened to the song of Tem Eyos Ki.  And then she flew away. 
 
Pero Qolus, la figura femenina que fue padre de los cuatro hijos  padres de 
toda la gente común, envió una canoa mágica, y Tem Eyos Ki le brincó 
adentro, cantando siempre su canción.  Voló por encima de las cabezas de los 
vociferantes hombres y de las llorosas mujeres y cantó sobre cosas que la 
gente había olvidado. 
 
   The men stopped arguing and began to talk. The women said why they had 
wanted to leave.  The men listened. The women listened.  The went home 
together, to try to live properly again. 
 
Los hombres dejaron de reñir y comenzaron a hablar.  Las mujeres dijeron por 
qué quisieron irse.  Los hombres escucharon.  Las mujeres escucharon. 
Juntos regresaron a casa, a tratar de vivir una vez más como se debe vivir. 
 
   But sometimes a woman will think she hears a song, or thinks she 
remembers beautiful words, and she will weep a little for the beauty that 
she almost knew.  Sometimes she will dream of a place that is not like this 
one.  Sometimes she almost thinks she knows what it was Tem Eyos Ki was 
singing in her song.  And she weeps for beauty she never knew. 
 
Pero a veces a una mujer le parecerá que escucha una canción, o piensa que 
recuerda hermosas palabras, y llorará un poco por la hermosura que casi 
llegó a conocer.  A veces soñará de un lugar que no es como éste de aquí.  A 
veces piensa que casi sabe qué es lo que Tem Eyos Ki decía en su canción.  Y 
gime por una belleza que no llegó a alcanzar.
