Dear Ricardo,
Five Moore, Oklahoma police officers attacked and killed Luis Rodriguez in front of his wife and daughter as his family left a movie theater on Valentine's Day. Luis was unarmed, innocent, and a threat to no one.
Luis' widow Nair says that he was simply trying to stop a fight between her and their daughter when police officers arrived on the scene and demanded to see his identification.1 When Luis tried to stop his wife from driving away, officers tackled, restrained, and pepper sprayed him — ignoring his pleas that he was unable to breathe. Luis died soon after, his wife capturing much of the gruesome scene on video.
Luis Rodriguez should not have died. The officers' overreaction led to the death of a man guilty of nothing but keeping the peace in his family. Police Chief Jerry Stillings said that his officers did nothing wrong that day — but he seems to ignore that his officers' overreaction caused the death of an innocent man and traumatized his family.2
Now that Luis' tragic death is getting national attention and the video of his death has been released, millions are now aware of his tragic death. If enough of us speak out now, we'll be able to force Moore Police Dept to hold the officers accountable.
Watch the chilling video, then tell Moore Police Chief Jerry Stillings to fire the officers involved in the death of Luis Rodriguez.
